Several popular ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe region have announced their opening dates for the 2026-2027 winter season, signaling preparations for a potentially snow-rich period after a recent season marked by significant snowfall deficits.

Vail Resorts has set November 20 as the opening date for its Heavenly and Northstar resorts. This date anticipates a "Super El Niño" event, which is expected to bring substantial snowfall to the area.

Other resorts are also preparing to welcome skiers and snowboarders. Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe is scheduled to open on November 20, while Palisades Tahoe will begin its season on November 25. Boreal Mountain Resort plans to open on November 27, and Kirkwood will follow on December 4.

"It may only be August, but we’re laser focused on preparing our resorts to deliver the best and most differentiated guest experience in skiing and riding," said Bill Rock, president of Vail Resorts’ Mountain Division. He added that while the company hopes for significant natural snowfall, they are also investing in snowmaking capabilities to ensure a memorable season.

This anticipated return to heavier snowfall is a welcome prospect following a winter season that saw many California resorts close early due to insufficient snow. Resorts such as Yosemite's Badger Pass, Dodge Ridge, Mt. Shasta, and Homewood Mountain in Tahoe experienced shortened seasons, with some facing difficulties even with snowmaking machines amid warmer temperatures.

Vail Resorts described the past winter as a "worst-case weather scenario" for many of its North American locations. The company's Chief Executive Rob Katz noted that their Colorado and Utah resorts experienced their lowest snowfall levels in over 30 years. Despite these challenges, Katz affirmed the company's commitment to enhancing the guest experience through investments in infrastructure, snowmaking, and technology.
