Lady Annabel Goldsmith, a prominent socialite and confidante of Princess Diana, left a net estate valued at over £5.6 million. Probate records indicate her UK assets totaled £6,668,035 before liabilities were deducted.
Lady Annabel, who died at age 91 on October 18 of last year, was widely known for lending her name to the upscale London nightclub Annabel's, established by her first husband, Mark Birley. She was the mother of six children.
The majority of her estate has been placed in trust for her two surviving children from her first marriage: entrepreneur Robin Birley and artist India-Jane.
Her three children from her second marriage to tycoon Sir James Goldsmith—Jemima Goldsmith Khan, politician Zac Goldsmith, and environmentalist Ben Goldsmith—were not major beneficiaries, as their will stated they had already been "generously provided for" by their late father. Sir James Goldsmith, who died in 1997, was reportedly worth £1.2 billion at the time of his death.
Sir James Goldsmith was also a political figure, having been elected to the European Parliament and founded the short-lived Referendum Party, which opposed Britain's membership in the European Union.
Lady Annabel's will, drafted in December 2024, stipulated that most of her personal possessions should be placed in a trust for her son Robin. Additionally, she bequeathed a William W Mr Morris landscape painting to Charles Filmer, one of the estate's executors.
Legacies were also made to several other individuals, including £20,000 to Tristram Powell, £10,000 to James Powell, £15,000 to her great-niece Maude Martel, and £10,000 each to her nieces Sophie Pilkington and Cosima Somerset. The remainder of her estate, along with a 1965 trust settlement, was divided equally between Robin Birley and India-Jane.
Lady Annabel's life was marked by notable associations and events. Her daughter Jemima was married to Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan. Her son Zac served as a Conservative Member of Parliament and Minister of State before becoming a life peer. Lady Annabel herself was recognized as a Eurosceptic political campaigner and author of her autobiography.
Born Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart in 1934, she was the daughter of the 8th Marquess of Londonderry. She married Mark Birley in 1954 and later Sir James Goldsmith in 1978. Her life included personal tragedies, such as the disappearance of her first child, Rupert Birley, in 1986, and her son Robin being mauled by a tigress in 1970.
She maintained a close friendship with Princess Diana, offering her support during the princess's challenging marriage. Lady Annabel testified at Princess Diana's inquest in 2007.
During her life, she was also involved in philanthropic work, supporting organizations such as the Countryside Alliance, the Soil Association, and the Dogs Trust. She also authored a book from the perspective of her pet dog, Copper.
Her first husband, Mark Birley, died in 2007, a decade after her second husband, Sir James Goldsmith.
