Kylie Jenner has addressed the long-standing criticism surrounding her 'self-made billionaire' title, stating that while she did not inherit the money she made, she acknowledges the privilege that aided her business ventures.
In a cover story for Who What Wear, the 29-year-old cosmetics mogul, who was first labeled a 'youngest-ever self-made billionaire' by Forbes in 2019, commented on the public's perception of her wealth. "None of the money I've ever made is inherited, so it's technically true," Jenner stated, "but people just feel like the privilege I've had was a major stepping stone."
Forbes had previously reported Jenner's net worth to be around $670 million, differing from their initial valuation. The publication had also noted in the past that while Jenner did not inherit her business, she benefited from her famous family's support. Jenner, then 21, surpassed Mark Zuckerberg as the youngest self-made billionaire in 2019.
Jenner's Kylie Cosmetics brand was valued at approximately $1.2 billion after she sold a 51% stake to Coty Inc. for $600 million in November 2018, a deal that closed in January 2019. She retains ownership of the remaining 49%.
Beyond her business dealings, Jenner also spoke about motherhood. She shares two children, Stormi and Aire, with ex-partner Travis Scott. Jenner revealed a personal promise made at age 25 to refrain from having more children during her twenties to focus on enjoying that period of her life. She described the first half of her twenties as consumed by pregnancy and recovery, including experiences with postpartum depression, which led her to feel she had "lost some of those young years of life."
As she approaches her 30th birthday next August, Jenner reflected on past ambitions, including her desire for an "enormous life." She noted a shift in perspective, admitting that her life had become "too big" and that she had momentarily "lost control of [her] life a little bit." This realization has led her to re-evaluate her past choices, such as purchasing a large home in Beverly Hills.
