Jimmy Kimmel has criticized former President Donald Trump for remarks made at a recent rally, specifically questioning Trump's statement that his supporters might not be able to afford a hamburger at his Mar-a-Lago club, even with a $5,000 check. Kimmel called the claim "ridiculous and relentless lies" being spread by Trump in the lead-up to the midterm elections.

Trump had suggested that Republicans retaining control of Congress would result in every adult American receiving a $5,000 check, which some ex-prosecutors have described as a "bribe." During his rally appearance, Trump specified that the funds could not be spent overseas, adding, "But we can spend it here at home." He then proceeded to suggest attendees might only be able to afford a hamburger and a small dessert at his Florida resort with the money.

Kimmel played a clip of the rally speech on his show and expressed disbelief at Trump's assertion. "Hold on. I have a question," Kimmel said. "Why are you saying this out loud? Why are you telling these people who’ve gathered to see you in their Chinese-made, American-flag Hawaiian shirts that they can’t afford to eat at your house? How is that helping you?"

The late-night host suggested that Trump appeared to be out of touch with his supporters, noting that it is "for the best" when the former president is not "in touch," implying negative consequences when he is.

Previously, Trump had initially invited rally attendees to be his guest at Mar-a-Lago, but quickly modified his statement regarding their ability to afford items at the club.

The remarks have drawn criticism, with some characterizing the $5,000 check proposal as a bribe intended to influence voters.
