Veteran NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski has issued a stark warning to Carson Hocevar, vowing retaliation after an on-track incident at Darlington Raceway that resulted in Keselowski spinning out.
During a recent race at Darlington, Hocevar made contact with Keselowski's car, causing it to spin. While Hocevar initially downplayed the incident, suggesting it was not intentional and that Keselowski had himself to blame, Keselowski's reaction indicated a different sentiment.
"His day's coming and it's coming hard. Watch out, Carson," Keselowski stated, a rare display of intense emotion for the usually reserved driver. This warning suggests that the sport's self-policing nature is likely to come into play.
Hocevar, who recently achieved significant popularity, evidenced by leading the series in merchandise sales, had previously discussed the state of NASCAR with the publication, drawing parallels to professional wrestling. He suggested that new drivers and personalities are not always understood by long-time fans.
"They don't understand the new guys," Hocevar said regarding the balance between established and new NASCAR fans. "'This guy is popular, and I don't understand why.' A lot of my friends, some of them love WWE and all the intricacies of that world. But the casuals of it, they're like, 'Man, I loved Stone Cold when he walked out. I never even watched him wrestle, but I liked him, and the Undertaker and their shticks.' It's very similar to how NASCAR fans describe everything and become negative to everything. A lot of times, they're not sure what they're looking for."
Despite the animosity, the dynamic has been framed as beneficial for NASCAR's entertainment value, with Hocevar being identified as a potential villain figure who also garners significant fan support. The incident and the subsequent warning have added a new layer of drama to the ongoing NASCAR season.
In other NASCAR news, the series has introduced a "swear jar" initiative, fining drivers $5 for each instance of profanity used over the radio during races. Ryan Blaney was noted for a particularly colorful outburst, contributing $10 to the jar. Dale Jarrett was also featured for a surprised reaction to the number of cars on track during a recent event.
