Famed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns reportedly opted to attend a gathering at the exclusive, male-only Bohemian Grove instead of accepting a prestigious award in person at the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference. Burns was slated to receive the "Writer in the World" Prize, which includes a $20,000 award, at the Idaho-based conference.
Despite his scheduled appearance and an announcement that he would discuss his latest project on the American Revolution, Burns ultimately participated virtually, delivering a brief acceptance speech via Zoom. Conference volunteers confirmed that Burns was expected in person but was unable to attend for "personal reasons."
Sources close to the event indicated Burns chose to attend the secretive Bohemian Grove encampment located along the Russian River in Monte Rio, California. This gathering is an annual event for the Bohemian Club, whose members have included notable figures such as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and the late David Koch.
Attendance at Bohemian Grove is highly selective, and for those invited to give a "Lakeside Talk," it is considered a significant honor. Insiders suggest that being asked to give such a talk, which Burns reportedly was, is not an invitation one would decline.
The Bohemian Club was founded in 1872 by a group of newspapermen, artists, actors, and musicians in San Francisco. The National Parks Service notes the club's origins in gatherings that allowed members to express different perspectives away from public scrutiny.
Bohemian Grove has long been the subject of public fascination and speculation due to its secretive nature and the prominent individuals who attend its events. The club's membership roster, reportedly released earlier this year, offers a rare glimpse into the influential figures who convene at the secluded location.
Burns, known for his extensive historical documentaries such as "The Civil War," "Jazz," and "The Vietnam War," has received numerous accolades for his work chronicling American history. His latest project focuses on the American Revolution, coinciding with the nation's 250th anniversary.
