Britagne Miller, a mother of four from Goddard, Kansas, is in critical condition after a family camping trip to Cheney Lake resulted in a severe spider bite reaction. Miller reported feeling approximately 15 spiders crawl onto her body and into her shirt while she was near a campfire on May 28.
Medical Emergency Unfolds
In the week following the incident, Miller began experiencing intense pain in her right leg, described as feeling like a stabbing. She was admitted to Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas, on June 4, where doctors discovered a large hematoma on her calf, a result of the spider bites. The situation was further complicated by Miller's pre-existing rare blood conditions and a compromised liver, which made the necessary surgery to remove the blood clots significantly more dangerous. Her husband, Jake Miller, stated that doctors warned she could bleed out during the procedure.
Doctors have not definitively identified the spider species, but they suspect it may have been a brown recluse, a venomous spider native to Kansas. Reactions to brown recluse bites can range from mild irritation to dangerous infections.
Extended Hospitalization and Complications
Miller's condition worsened over the following weeks, with periods of incoherence. She spent 10 days in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) followed by time in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) before being moved to a regular floor. Despite the grim prognosis, with multiple doctors advising she had only days to a month to live and recommending hospice care, Miller expressed a strong will to fight for her family.
She has undergone numerous life-saving treatments, including blood transfusions, plasma, platelets, cryoprecipitate, antibiotics, and potassium. However, as she began to show signs of improvement, she developed a blood infection and a bacterial staph infection. This led to tissue necrosis around her stitches, requiring bedside procedures to remove dead skin and additional antibiotic treatments.
Financial Strain and Family Support
The ordeal has placed a significant financial burden on the family. Jake Miller lost his job due to his inability to maintain the required work schedule while caring for his wife and their four children, aged nine to 15. This loss resulted in the loss of their income and insurance.
Miller is now awaiting a liver transplant, but doctors have indicated she may need several more months to stabilize before the operation can be considered. Her husband has remained by her side throughout her hospitalization, caring for their children and documenting his wife's struggle and resilience. A GoFundMe has been established by Jake Miller to help with medical expenses and support the family during this challenging time.
