Body camera footage released by the Vancouver Police Department shows a police K-9 being deployed through a car window to apprehend a suspected impaired driver after a 40-minute standoff on July 26. The driver, identified as Brandon Wells, had reportedly ignored commands to surrender for over 40 minutes.
Officers responded to reports of a driver who appeared impaired and was allegedly inhaling from compressed air cans while driving. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over, striking a curb and nearly driving into a yard as they attempted to evade police. The vehicle was eventually stopped using a Grappler device.
Even after the vehicle came to a stop, the driver continued to refuse commands to exit. Police reported that Wells continued to inhale from compressed air cans throughout the standoff. Officers considered other options, including a less-lethal launcher and pepper balls, before deploying K-9 Midas.
The footage shows the K-9 leaping through the driver's side window. Officers then quickly surrounded the vehicle and took Wells into custody.
Brandon Wells was booked into the Clark County Jail on charges including attempting to elude police, driving under the influence, reckless driving, and resisting arrest.
