Luggage manufacturer July has introduced what it claims is the world's first suitcase with built-in tracking technology. The July Checked with CaseSafe aims to provide travelers with peace of mind by allowing them to monitor their luggage location via smartphone.
The suitcase features an integrated tracker that can be paired with Apple's Find My app or Google's Find Hub. Setup involves pulling a plastic tab on the tracker inside the suitcase, after which it is ready to pair.
During testing, the setup process was described as seamless. Once paired, the suitcase could be immediately located on the Find My app. However, one traveler noted that during a trip to Turkey with no internet, the suitcase was showing its last known location as the UK, which caused stress. The luggage also arrived last on the conveyor belt.
In terms of performance, the July Checked suitcase was found to be slightly clunkier and heavier than some comparable models, though its wheels were noted as silent. Durability was a concern, as the suitcase, made with an aerospace-grade polycarbonate shell and aluminum corner bumpers, showed scuffs and marks after a single trip. Despite this, the suitcase comes with a lifetime warranty.
The design offers significant storage capacity, with the Checked Plus model boasting 110L and a 77cm height. It includes numerous compartments and a Y-strap compression system, along with a separate stain-proof laundry bag. However, its size contributes to its weight even when empty.
Retailing at £305, the July Checked with CaseSafe is positioned as a worthwhile investment for those who frequently worry about losing their luggage. While not the cheapest option on the market, its unique tracking feature is highlighted as a key differentiator. Online reviews often rate the suitcase highly, praising its smooth wheels, premium feel, maneuverability, internal organization, and the tracking system. Common criticisms include its tendency to scratch easily and its substantial weight.
July offers several sizes, with the standard model at 80L and the Large Checked Plus at 110L. The company emphasizes its innovative approach to luggage design, including the integrated trackers and a lifetime warranty.
