A federal judge in Miami is set to hear arguments on Thursday regarding the custody status of social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate as they fight extradition to the United Kingdom. US Magistrate Lauren Louis will determine if the brothers should remain in federal custody or be released while the extradition process, potentially lasting months, unfolds.
The Tate brothers have been held at a federal detention center in Miami since their arrest on July 18. Their attorneys have argued that their high public profile makes fleeing unlikely and that they have consistently shared their locations on social media. Prosecutors, however, contend that the serious nature of the charges in the UK, which include human trafficking and violent rapes, along with allegations in Romania of witness intimidation, present a clear public safety risk and establish a strong presumption against bail in international extradition cases.
The UK has until mid-September to submit evidence to the State Department to support the extradition request. The brothers, known for promoting wealth, male dominance, and misogyny online, have denied all accusations. This legal battle is the latest development in their international legal proceedings, which also involve allegations in Romania of luring women for sexual exploitation. They are reportedly being held in a specialized unit for their own protection.
