A judge has granted Elijah Bieniemy, the son of Kansas City Chiefs coach Eric Bieniemy, a competency evaluation after he was accused of shooting his mother. Elijah Bieniemy, 27, is facing charges including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling.

His public defender argued that Elijah Bieniemy is experiencing mental health issues and is unable to assist in his own defense, prompting the judge's decision for a competency hearing. He was not present at the court hearing on Thursday morning, nor were any members of the Bieniemy family.

Mia Bieniemy, 57, was shot in the left forearm and shoulder on Sunday night. The injuries traveled across her chest. She called 911 herself and was reportedly struggling to breathe. She was moved out of intensive care on Thursday and has undergone surgery, according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Law enforcement was seen entering the Bieniemy home in Virginia on Sunday evening, with footage from neighbors showing three officers carrying an injured woman out of the residence. The exact circumstances leading to the shooting are still under investigation.
