College football commentator Josh Pate is expanding his presence with ESPN, set to co-host a new Friday television program originating from college campuses nationwide alongside Will Compton and Taylor Lewan. This development marks a significant step in Pate's career, which he described as surreal, especially considering his past financial struggles.
Pate shared with OutKick that he once earned as little as $27,000 annually and faced eviction, a stark contrast to his current position as the head of a prominent independent sports media brand. He indicated he strategically turns down sponsorship opportunities to avoid oversaturation.
During a discussion with OutKick, Pate addressed speculation about ESPN's future strategy, where he was mentioned as one of four individuals the network plans to build around, alongside Pat McAfee, Laura Rutledge, and Peter Schrager. Pate expressed professional reverence for those individuals, particularly highlighting McAfee's significant impact on sports media.
"Pat McAfee in our space... is one of the ones who not only created wealth and success for themselves, but created wealth and success for hundreds and thousands of other people merely because they existed," Pate stated, drawing a parallel to the impact of wrestling star Steve Austin on his industry.
While his new ESPN role is a significant expansion, Pate emphasized that he will retain ownership of his media company and its flagship "Josh Pate's College Football Show." The independent brand operates with multiple revenue streams, including YouTube ad revenue, brand deals, merchandise, public speaking, and talent agreements.
Pate also articulated his philosophy on content creation, stating he focuses on subjects he understands and that his audience engages with, rather than addressing topics solely due to platform size. He asserted that individuals with platforms have the autonomy to decide what content to produce based on their audience's preferences.
Looking beyond college football, Pate revealed plans to potentially expand his media company into his secondary passion: weather, with a particular interest in storm chasing. He noted that while he is not a meteorologist, his deep interest in atmospheric science and storm chasing could lead to future projects.
Pate also touched upon the importance of his faith, stating that his belief in God is integral to his daily life.
