Comedian Jon Stewart has criticized the Trump administration's approach to Iran, asserting that recent military actions have led to an agreement with terms similar to those previously rejected. Stewart, host of "The Daily Show," suggested on his program that the perceived diplomatic success of allowing International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors back into Iran represents a return to a status quo that existed before significant military engagement.
Stewart highlighted that IAEA inspectors were permitted under the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated during the Obama administration. He noted that after nearly four months of conflict, Iran has now agreed to similar terms, with the added condition of access to a reconstruction fund reportedly valued at $300 billion. He sarcastically remarked on Vice President JD Vance's characterization of the emerging agreement as a "classic Trump deal."
"Oh, it is a classic Trump deal. Announce a bold action with grandiose ambition, and then shit the bed, and then state confidently that bed shit was the goal all along," Stewart said, characterizing what he views as the administration's pattern of action and subsequent reframing of outcomes. He suggested this approach leads to accepting previously available terms after initiating costly actions.
Prior to Stewart's commentary, Vice President Vance had announced what he described as a "major milestone," indicating Iran's agreement to permit IAEA inspectors. Stewart questioned the significance of this development, given that inspectors were present under the previous nuclear accord and before the recent military escalations.
