During Wednesday's episode of "The Tonight Show," host Jimmy Fallon offered a humorous critique of former President Joe Biden's newly announced memoir, "Promise Me, America." The book, slated for release on November 17, is set to detail Biden's presidency and his decision not to seek re-election in 2024.
Fallon, displaying the book's cover, quipped that the memoir was written by a "ghost writer, Joe Biden." He then joked that the book's length might be limited, suggesting it would be "three pages" long, referencing a humorous comparison to Homer's "The Odyssey."
The late-night host further jested that parts of the book, particularly the epilogue, were penned by former Vice President Kamala Harris. "It's kind of a strange book because toward the end it starts being written by Kamala Harris," Fallon remarked.
The announcement of "Promise Me, America" came via a video posted by Biden on X. The memoir is described as exploring the challenges the nation faces, his decisions in office, guiding the country through COVID-19, rebuilding the economy, restoring democracy after the January 6th events, ending the war in Afghanistan, strengthening NATO, and supporting Ukraine. The book's release date is positioned approximately two weeks after the midterm elections.
Lindy Li, identified as a former top Democratic fundraiser, suggested that Biden's decision to release another memoir explaining his re-election choice might be counterproductive. According to Li, the book could reopen sensitive issues for Democrats following the 2024 election outcome. She characterized the book as a potential microcosm of Biden's presidency, reflecting a sentiment some might express as "Why can't you just shut the f— up?"
Representatives for the former president were contacted for comment on Fallon's jokes but had not immediately responded.
