Former CNN host Jim Acosta has acknowledged that his former network fostered an environment during the COVID-19 pandemic where questioning official narratives was discouraged. Acosta made these remarks during an episode of his streaming show, "The Jim Acosta Show," in response to comments by TMZ founder Harvey Levin.

Levin suggested that CNN, during the pandemic, created an atmosphere where challenging certain policies or information related to COVID-19 was met with hostility. "There was this element of if you disagreed with them, that you were somehow traitorous," Levin stated. He clarified that he was not accusing CNN of knowingly creating this atmosphere but rather observed a general intolerance for dissent.

Acosta, who worked at CNN during the pandemic, stated, "Yeah, no. I agree with you." He attributed the challenges in coverage to the real-time nature of the unfolding crisis and the significant amount of disinformation circulating at the time. Acosta pointed to former President Donald Trump as a primary source of misinformation, referencing his controversial suggestions about disinfectant and light bulbs.

Acosta explained his approach during his tenure at CNN was to "concentrate on having as many scientists and doctors and experts on as much as possible, just to make sure people were getting reliable information." He characterized recent congressional hearings concerning Dr. Anthony Fauci as "full-blown McCarthyism."

The discussion arose as Dr. Fauci faces scrutiny from Republican lawmakers. These lawmakers have accused him of misleading Congress regarding funding for experiments that could potentially have contributed to the virus's spread and have questioned his public statements on masks, social distancing, natural immunity, and vaccines. The Senate Homeland Security Committee recently voted to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress after he invoked the Fifth Amendment multiple times during a hearing about the government's pandemic response.

Levin, while criticizing the atmosphere surrounding COVID-19 discourse, also defended Fauci against what he called the "abhorrent" effort to portray him as a criminal. The origins of COVID-19, whether through a laboratory incident or natural zoonotic transmission, remain a subject of debate, with Senator Rand Paul being a vocal critic of Fauci's perceived downplaying of the lab-leak theory.
