A brazen ram-raid attempt at Pakistan Jewellers in Bradford, West Yorkshire, was foiled Saturday afternoon when the store's owner confronted armed robbers with a bat, forcing them to flee without any stolen goods. The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. when a group of seven individuals, described as masked and carrying swords, rammed a 4x4 vehicle through the shop's front entrance while customers were present.
CCTV footage captured the vehicle reversing into the store, causing significant damage to the storefront and sending debris scattering. Three customers were inside at the time, sheltering in a corner amidst the rubble. One masked man, armed with a machete, climbed over the debris into the store as others, carrying large empty bags, moved around the damaged exterior.
Mohammad Ali Ilyas, the 20-year-old son of the owner and a part-time defender of the family-run business since 2009, intervened. After initially throwing a small hammer at the intruders, he grabbed a bat and pursued the gang. As they attempted to escape in a separate vehicle, Ilyas used the bat to smash the rear window of their getaway car, further deterring their flight.
"They rammed the truck into the windows while customers were inside, attempting to rob some gold from our store, but they failed. Nothing was taken," Ilyas told the Daily Mail. He described the encounter as "horrendous" and admitted to being scared but also filled with rage to protect those inside. "I was just so tense, I didn't know what to do, so I threw the small hammer at them. I then grabbed the bat despite my dad pulling me back," he recounted.
The attack, which lasted approximately 35 seconds, resulted in no injuries. Police cordoned off the scene, including the abandoned 4x4 vehicle, which was left at the junction of Duckworth Lane and Toller Lane. The shop is expected to remain closed for at least two weeks for repairs. Despite the incident, Ilyas expressed his commitment to the family's legacy in the jewelry business, stating, "I love doing what I do. We will be back."
