Jelly Roll Considers Quitting Country Music for Divine Calling

Country music star Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, has revealed that he is open to leaving the music industry if he believes it is what God intends for him. In a previously recorded interview with "Y’all Access Radio’s" Kelly Sutton, published on September 13, DeFord stated that he has achieved many of his career aspirations and now feels compelled to seek divine guidance on his next steps.

"Everything that Jason or Jelly Roll wanted to do in the music business, I’ve done now, so at this point, I really need to go talk to God and see if he wants me to stick around, or what he wants me to do next," DeFord said. He added that if he were called to work in a different capacity, such as volunteering at a homeless shelter, he would depart from his music career without hesitation. "If God tells me to go work at a homeless shelter in Paducah, Ky., I’m outta here, you know what I'm saying? DeFord, who has achieved significant success with hits like "Son of a Sinner" and "Need a Favor," noted that he has accomplished most of his professional goals. He emphasized the importance of introspection and seeking clarity, stating, "I just got to go do a little bit of work on myself to make sure that I’m all the way ready. I’m completely sober, though. I’m clear-headed, and I’m deep in therapy, I’m deep in my Bible, but I think that I got to separate from the chaos of the business for me to really hear what God wants to do for me next."

This reflection comes after a significant year for the artist, marked by personal and professional milestones. In February, Jelly Roll received three Grammy Awards, including best contemporary country album for "Beautifully Broken." He was also honored with the Country Radio Broadcasters' 2026 Artist Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic efforts.

In May, DeFord filed for divorce from his wife, Bunnie Xo, after nearly a decade of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in July.

Earlier in the year, Jelly Roll also faced some public commentary after making jokes about former President Donald Trump's physical fitness during his guest hosting stint on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" DeFord later addressed the reactions, asserting his balanced political views and identifying primarily as a Christian, a country music singer, a farmer, and a bow hunter.
