Vice President JD Vance has publicly commended Indiana Fever basketball player Sophie Cunningham for her outspoken advocacy on issues concerning women's sports. During an appearance on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle," Vance addressed the national attention Cunningham has received following her public stance.
"Look, sometimes when you're courageous in this country, some of the worst people in the world will try to attack you," Vance stated. He advised Cunningham and others to "keep speaking your mind," asserting that for every critic, she inspires a dozen others. Vance emphasized the contagious nature of courage, suggesting that one person speaking honestly can embolden many to do the same. "So I would tell Sophie to keep going."
Cunningham's position has become a focal point, leading to rallies at recent Indiana Fever games, with further demonstrations planned for upcoming matchups. The attention has drawn the WNBA into the broader national discussion surrounding transgender athletes in women's sports, with several coaches issuing statements on the matter.
The Indiana Fever organization has largely sought to shield its players from the ongoing national conversation. The team is currently engaged in a competitive stretch of its season, including a recent loss to the Minnesota Lynx and an upcoming game against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces, followed by contests against the Chicago Sky and the New York Liberty. Another rally supporting Cunningham is anticipated at the game against the Sky.
