Former Los Angeles Rams defensive end Jared Verse shared a notable rookie year anecdote involving San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams. Verse, who was traded to the Cleveland Browns this offseason for Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, recalled an encounter with Williams during his inaugural NFL season.
Verse, the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year, described the experience on NFL Network. The interaction took place at SoFi Stadium. Verse attempted to disengage from Williams, who is entering his 16th NFL season, but found it unexpectedly difficult.
"It was like moving cinder blocks," Verse said of Williams' grip. "I literally like move his hands, chopping, doing all this stuff to get his hands off. And I literally said like, ‘Trent, get off of me.’"
Williams, according to Verse, responded with laughter. "Trent’s got like a deep-ass voice. He literally just starts laughing and was like, ‘You so funny, Verse.’"
The Rams and 49ers are scheduled to open the NFL season in Australia. Verse, however, will not be participating for the Rams in that game as he begins his new role with the Browns.
