James Haven, 53, the brother of actress Angelina Jolie, announced he is gay during a live video stream with his former wife, Romi Imbelli, on Thursday. The announcement follows the couple's separation in August 2024 and a subsequent annulment in March 2025, less than a year after their wedding.
Haven, whose father is actor Jon Voight, shared that he has recognized this part of himself since childhood, recalling an obsession with Disney princesses. "It was never about pretending to be someone else," Haven said during the stream. "It was about letting a part of myself shine that had always been there."
He explained that coming out is not about becoming someone new but about "allowing everyone else to meet the person who has been here all along." Haven expressed hope that his family and others will "choose love over fear, understanding over judgment, and connection over the beliefs that may have kept us apart."
Imbelli, who was also present on the live stream, expressed her support for Haven, admitting she had suspected his sexuality. "I didn't want to see it. I didn't want to believe," she stated. "I knew it and I wanted to support you and love you, and then I didn't want to believe it because then it would mean losing you in that capacity, which I couldn't."
Despite the annulment, Imbelli affirmed that Haven will remain her "life partner." "We will do life together," she said. "You are not my close friend. You are my love. And you happen to be gay."
The couple also released a joint statement on Instagram. "I wasn't here to out someone I love. I was here to help set someone free," Imbelli wrote in the statement. "There is a difference. In return he set me free."
Haven and Imbelli married in a private ceremony in Laguna Beach, California, in August 2024. Jolie was reportedly absent from the wedding. Haven does not have any children.
