In her memoir, "I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie," actress Jaclyn Smith reveals the details of her first husband Roger Davis' infidelity and her subsequent decision to remain in the marriage. Smith, who was married to Davis from 1968 to 1975, learned of his affair with their real estate agent, Laura, two years into their union.
The revelation came from Bill, Laura's husband, who reportedly attempted to make a pass at Smith. This led Smith to confront Laura, who then confessed to the affair. Smith expressed her disbelief in her book, writing, "I couldn’t imagine how two people I trusted could have betrayed me, and for so long."
Adding another layer to the narrative, Smith recalled an incident in New York City where she encountered Warren Beatty, who invited her to audition for a film. During this interaction, Davis allegedly interrupted and told Beatty that Smith was unavailable, claiming she only did commercials. Smith later learned from Laura that while she was speaking with Beatty, Davis was engaged in an affair with Laura in a nearby apartment.
When Smith confronted Davis, he reportedly denied the infidelity, blaming Laura's alleged jealousy and advances towards him. Despite the revelations, Smith chose to stay with Davis, a decision she described as being swayed by denial and the easier path of blind belief over confronting a painful truth. "My options were to leave Roger then, after only two years of marriage, and feel humiliated by my own naïveté, or to give the man I loved the benefit of the doubt and hope I’d made the right decision. I chose the latter," she wrote.
However, the marriage ultimately ended two years later. On their fourth wedding anniversary, Smith discovered Davis with another woman. This marked the end of their seven-year marriage.
Smith has been married four times. Her second marriage was to actor Dennis Cole, which ended in divorce in 1981 after she discovered his infidelity. Her third marriage was to cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond, with whom she shares two children, Gaston and Spencer-Margaret. They divorced in 1989. Since 1997, Smith has been married to her fourth husband, cardiothoracic surgeon Brad Allen.
