Israel has shared intelligence with the United States indicating a new Iranian plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump, according to a report. The alleged assassination plan is said to be a response to the 2020 killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps General Qasem Soleimani by U.S. forces.
During remarks at a NATO summit, Trump acknowledged that he is a target of Iranian threats, stating, "I'm on every single one of their lists." He added, "And so far, I guess I've been a bit lucky, but maybe that doesn't last very long."
Trump described the individuals behind such threats as "evil, sick people" that need to be "root[ed] out." He likened the situation to needing to "cut out cancer early."
Trump was traveling on a new aircraft during his trip but switched to a different Air Force One for his return journey. The White House described the plane switch as a strategic measure to ensure the commander-in-chief's safety. War Secretary Pete Hegseth, who was accompanying the president, was reportedly instructed not to travel to Israel as planned shortly before Trump changed planes in Turkey. It remains unclear if the alleged Iranian threat extended to Hegseth.
The Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the alleged plot, did not provide specific details about the assassination plan itself.
