Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles from its territory in an attempted surprise attack targeting U.S. forces in the Middle East on Tuesday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported.

CENTCOM stated on X, formerly Twitter, that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces initiated the launches at 5:45 p.m. ET. All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted, and U.S. forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness, according to the command.

The missile firings occurred just one day after mediators announced "significant" progress in cease-fire talks between the U.S. and Iran. President Trump had previously halted new U.S. strikes on Iran on Friday as he assessed Tehran's readiness to reach an agreement. On Monday, Trump expressed optimism about a potential deal but cautioned that the conflict could escalate if negotiations faltered.

"You know, they wanted to talk. … we’re having good talks, so we’ll see what happens," Trump had said. "I think there’s a good chance that something could happen, and if it does, good. If it doesn’t, we go back to doing what we were doing two days ago."
