Despite a notable decrease in the overall inflation rate in June, consumers continue to face elevated prices for essential grocery items. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.5% over the past 12 months, a decrease from May's 4.2%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This cooling was largely driven by a significant 5.7% drop in energy costs, the largest monthly decrease since April 2020.

Lower energy prices, including a 9.7% decrease in gasoline costs, along with stable new vehicle prices and a 0.2% dip in used car prices, contributed to the modest overall inflation reading. Non-alcoholic beverages also saw a 1.5% decrease, and coffee prices fell by 2%. Fruits and vegetables experienced a 0.2% decline.

However, the food index saw an increase of 0.2% in June, mirroring May's trend, with food at home also rising by 0.2%. Four of the six major grocery categories reported price upticks. Notably, the index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs increased by 0.6%, with egg prices alone jumping 4.3% in a single month. Dairy products also rose by 1.2%.

In response to persistent high grocery costs, a review of major retailers identified several options for shoppers seeking to purchase staples at lower prices. These prices can vary by location.

For eggs, Walmart offered a 12-count of cage-free, large white eggs for $1.47, while Kroger's grade A large white eggs were priced at $1.59.

In the dairy aisle, Walmart's Great Value 16-count American cheese singles were priced at $1.88, followed closely by Aldi's Happy Farms American Cheese Singles at $1.89.

For poultry, Perdue chicken thighs were found at Walmart for $4.36 (approximately $1.90-$2.42 per pound). Target sold the same product for $4.82, and Aldi offered its Kirkwood Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs for $6.64 per pound.

Tilapia, a cost-effective fish option, was priced at $6.28 per pound under Walmart's Great Value brand. Aldi's tilapia was $6.79 per pound, and Kroger's locally sourced tilapia was $6.99 per pound.

When it comes to ground beef, Walmart offered a 73% lean and 27% fat ground beef roll for $5.94 per pound. Kroger's similar 73/27 ground beef roll was priced at $6.79 per pound.
