Imperial College London has once again secured the top position in national rankings for the fourth consecutive year, solidifying its status as a leading global institution for science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and business (STEMMB). The university reported a record number of applications for its September 2025 intake, with nearly half of the undergraduate students recruited from overseas.

Financial Support and Admissions

Imperial offers a comprehensive financial aid program, distributing £12 million annually in bursaries and scholarships. Support is available to students from households with annual incomes up to £70,000. Over 40% of UK undergraduates benefit from this system, which considers financial need, academic merit, and widening participation. For the 2027 academic year, care leavers and students estranged from their parents will receive an annual bursary of £5,500. Medical students entering their clinical years (five and six) will also see increased funding, with eligible MBBS students receiving an additional bursary between £1,300 and £10,400 based on household income.

A contextual admissions scheme, implemented in September 2025, offers an interview or a conditional offer to applicants from areas with high deprivation, those receiving free school meals, care leavers, first-generation university students, and those attending underperforming secondary schools. Minimum entry requirements are typically AAA at A-level or equivalent. The university has also established a reconsideration pool for applicants who meet contextual criteria and achieve exceptional A-level results on results day.

Student Life and Well-being

The university provides a robust student support network, including personal and academic tutoring across all departments. New initiatives offer wraparound support for students from under-represented backgrounds to foster a sense of belonging, enhance social capital, and build self-confidence. A work shadowing program allows these students to gain workplace experience through short placements.

Imperial's campus in South Kensington is complemented by medical facilities at three central London hospitals and an additional campus at White City. The university will introduce three new degree programs in September 2027: an MSci in medical science and innovation, and a BEng or MEng in mathematics and computer science for AI.

Wellbeing staff are integrated into each faculty, and mental health first-aiders are available across campus. Accommodation wardens and support teams have received mental health training, and personal tutors undergo mandatory workshops focused on mental health. Since 2022, a dedicated student mental health intervention team has provided one-to-one support, group workshops, and therapeutic courses, including mindfulness-based stress reduction and compassion-focused therapy, which are popular among students.

Accommodation and Future Developments

Imperial provides nearly 3,000 accommodation rooms. For the 2026-27 academic year, standard twin rooms cost £5,850 for a 39-week contract, while small standard single rooms start at £6,786. Premium single en-suite rooms are priced at £16,575.

The university plans to expand its Imperial Inspires scholarships, which currently support at least 300 international students annually, to include UK students in the future. A hardship support fund provided £446,000 in aid during the 2024-25 academic year for students facing severe financial difficulties.
