An Illinois mother charged with first-degree murder in the death of her two-year-old son, Barrett 'Bear' Walsh, allegedly discussed the trial of Lindsay Clancy in a group chat on the day the child was found deceased. Corie Walsh, 40, is accused of hanging her son in the basement of their suburban Chicago home on September 1.
During a court hearing on Tuesday, prosecutors stated that Walsh was actively discussing the Clancy case, and claimed she had also intended to poison her husband with a drink mixed with prescription medication. Walsh's defense team, however, criticized the prosecution's characterization as a 'copycat theory,' asserting that the media attention surrounding the Clancy trial simply coincided with Walsh's 'psychosis.'
According to Walsh's attorney, on the day her son died, she was planning a trip to Disney World with her mother, expressing excitement about her son experiencing the trip. The defense also noted that Walsh had been part of a group chat discussing conspiracy theories about Clancy's husband but indicated a change of heart on the day of her son's death, texting friends, 'It's manslaughter. Please help. I'm really freaking out.'
Jurors were deliberating murder charges against Clancy when Walsh sent that message. Clancy admitted to strangling her three children in January 2023 but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis and overmedication. Patrick Clancy, Lindsay Clancy's husband, has denied misinformation and threatened legal action against those spreading 'vile claims' about him.
Prosecutors stated that Walsh told police she killed her son because he was 'the devil' and 'the Antichrist.' Neighbors discovered the boy hanging from a rafter in the basement of the family's home. Walsh was also found with self-inflicted cuts to her wrists and thighs, lying in a bathtub, according to prosecutors.
Walsh's defense team argued that her husband and their families are supportive and believe she was experiencing a mental health crisis. They requested Walsh be released to her mother for psychiatric treatment pending trial. The judge ordered that Walsh be held in jail and that the State Attorney's Office ensure she receives medical treatment. Her next court appearance is scheduled for September 24.
