U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has renewed its pursuit of two sons of convicted drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman-Loera, offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the capture of Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar and Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar. The brothers are alleged leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel and are considered "armed and dangerous."
Wanted posters recently released by ICE state "Two down and two to go" regarding the Guzman sons, with the other two, Joaquin Guzman Lopez and Ovidio Guzman Lopez, already in custody. Ivan and Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar are charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and operating a continuing criminal enterprise.
Following their father's final capture in 2016 and the subsequent shift of cartel leadership, the four sons reportedly assumed control of the Sinaloa Cartel. The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Andrew Boutros, has stated that these efforts are part of a broader initiative to bring to justice individuals involved in drug trafficking and other criminal activities that impact American communities.
Previous efforts to apprehend cartel members have included operations targeting transnational criminal organizations. One of Guzman Lopez's sons admitted in a plea agreement to engaging in violence against law enforcement, rival traffickers, and members of his own organization to protect the cartel's operations. The Trump administration had previously emphasized efforts to combat Mexican drug cartels, with then-President Donald Trump asserting that cartels were "totally running Mexico" and posed a significant threat to the U.S. border. Acting CBP Deputy Commissioner Ron Vitello noted an increase in drug seizures and enhanced capabilities against drug trafficking during that period, which reportedly led to a decreased cocaine supply and increased prices.
ICE and the Department of Homeland Security were contacted for additional comment. Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar and Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar remain fugitives.
