Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents fatally shot a 26-year-old migrant from Colombia early Monday morning in Biddeford, Maine, during an operation to arrest him. The incident, which occurred in front of the man's young daughter, has drawn criticism and sparked protests.
Witnesses reported that the migrant, whose name has not been publicly released, accelerated his white Kia sedan toward a group of ICE agents who were attempting to apprehend him. One agent then fired through the windshield, striking the driver in the head. He died on the sidewalk.
Footage circulating online shows ICE agents handcuffing the mortally wounded man as he lay on the ground. Witnesses also described an altercation where an older woman, identified as the migrant's mother, confronted agents, exclaiming, "You took her dad, you took her dad." Another witness claimed an agent spoke rudely to the victim's young daughter.
The man had an active warrant for his arrest and was the target of the ICE operation, according to officials. Immigration advocacy groups stated that he possessed work authorization and a Social Security number in the U.S. The specific reasons for the warrant or the ICE operation remain unclear.
The Office of the Maine Attorney General confirmed that agents opened fire when the man "attempted to flee in a vehicle in the direction of the officer." Security footage from a local laundromat appeared to show the vehicle rolling into an intersection after the shooting, suggesting the accelerator may have been engaged.
Calls for accountability and transparency have emerged from local and federal officials. Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree expressed deep disturbance and anger, questioning the necessity of the operation in Maine and whether the individual was being pursued for a criminal record or during a routine stop. "More than anything else, I want to know why you're in Maine?" Pingree stated.
The shooting follows a recent incident in Houston where an ICE agent fatally shot a Mexican immigrant during a traffic stop, also leading to protests. The events in Maine have amplified scrutiny on ICE's enforcement practices.
In the aftermath of the Biddeford shooting, ICE agents and other law enforcement officers were seen consoling each other at the scene. The shooting prompted immediate demonstrations, with local social justice groups organizing protests and calling for further action.
