An Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation ended in the death of an undocumented immigrant after agents said the suspect struck and dragged an officer with his vehicle while resisting arrest.
ICE identified the man as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez. According to media reports, agents attempted to stop his car when he drove into the arrest team, struck an agent and dragged him “a significant distance with his car” as he tried to flee. Another agent fired at the suspect. Both the injured officer and Villegas-Gonzalez were taken to hospitals; Villegas-Gonzalez was pronounced dead on arrival and the officer sustained severe injuries but was described as in stable condition.
NBC reported that the suspect had a history of reckless driving. In a statement obtained by CNN, the Department of Homeland Security said it was praying for the officer’s speedy recovery and asserted that the officer “followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement.” The statement also criticized what it called viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal entry and resistance to law enforcement, saying such messaging “spread misinformation” and undermined safety.
Officials have not released additional details about the location of the arrest or the precise sequence of events leading up to the shooting beyond the accounts cited by media outlets and the DHS statement. NBC and other outlets reported on the dragging of the officer and the subsequent use of deadly force by an ICE agent.
Deaths and serious injuries that occur during immigration enforcement actions typically draw scrutiny from law enforcement oversight bodies, legal advocates and civil rights groups. The DHS statement framed the shooting as an example of an officer responding to an immediate threat to public safety and to the safety of fellow agents.
ICE did not, in the available statements, provide additional information on any administrative or criminal inquiries that may follow. Local prosecutors, internal DHS oversight offices or federal investigators sometimes review use-of-force incidents involving immigration agents to determine whether policies were followed and whether any further action is warranted.
The incident adds to ongoing national debate over border enforcement, interior immigration operations and the tactics used by federal agents when detaining undocumented immigrants. Advocates for migrants and civil liberties groups have in the past called for greater transparency and independent oversight in cases where enforcement actions result in serious injury or death. DHS’s statement referenced that broader public conversation, linking it to concerns about misinformation and encouragements to resist law enforcement shared on social media.
Media outlets reporting on the case cited law enforcement accounts and initial statements from DHS; further factual detail and official findings are expected as investigators review the circumstances and as agencies provide updates.
