Human remains were discovered buried in the backyard of a missing family's home in Litchfield Park, Arizona, prompting a homicide investigation, authorities announced Thursday. Police also stated they believe the family's adult son, 27-year-old Matthew Flores, is a suspect and may have fled the United States.

The investigation began Tuesday when relatives requested a welfare check for the family – a husband, wife, and their adult son – at their home located about 20 miles outside of Phoenix. Officers found no one present but observed indications of potential foul play, which led to the initiation of a missing persons investigation.

Authorities confirmed on Thursday that the unidentified human remains were found on the property. The names of the husband and wife have not been released at the request of their family. Police have indicated there is no known threat to the community.

Investigators believe Matthew Flores fled the country prior to the welfare check on Tuesday. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the Avondale Police Department at 623-333-7001.
