Howard Stern is significantly scaling back his SiriusXM show, moving to one new episode per week in the fall. This change in programming will result in the layoff of approximately 12 staff members.
The veteran media personality, 72, will return from his summer vacation with the new schedule. The remaining four days of the week will be filled with previously aired material. Staffers were informed of the reduction during a Zoom call and subsequently sent home. Those laid off will be eligible for severance packages based on their tenure with the satellite radio company.
The shift comes several months after Stern signed a new three-year contract with SiriusXM in late 2025. At the time of the signing, Stern described the deal's flexibility as appealing, allowing him more free time while continuing his radio career. His previous contract was reportedly for five years and worth $500 million.
Stern's wife, Beth Stern, has previously indicated her influence on his decision to continue broadcasting. In May, she stated on Andy Cohen Live that she believes it is beneficial for him to continue, as he still enjoys the work and remains effective. She also suggested that his show helps him stay connected to current events.
Longtime listeners have expressed disappointment with the reduction in new content. Some have linked the downsizing to the departure of former SiriusXM CEO Jim Meyer in 2020 and the passing of Stern's longtime agent Don Buchwald in 2024, suggesting these events accelerated Stern's decline with the company. Comments on social media and fan forums reflect a sentiment that the show has overstayed its original impact, with some listeners feeling Stern could have retired as a legend rather than continuing to this extent.
