A gunman who opened fire on passing vehicles in Houston, injuring three people including a mother and her daughter, was shot by responding law enforcement officers. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. local time on Wayside Drive when officers were called to reports of a person shooting at cars.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a man armed with a handgun. Authorities commanded the suspect to drop the weapon. Subsequently, three Houston police officers and a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety opened fire on the individual. The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a hospital for treatment. No officers were injured during the exchange.

A witness told KRIV-TV that the suspect was firing at vehicles traveling in both directions on Wayside Drive, indiscriminately targeting drivers. The witness observed the suspect standing in the median and shooting at cars as they passed.

Among the vehicles targeted was one carrying a mother and daughter, both of whom were hit by gunfire. A third individual in a separate vehicle was also injured, according to police. An occupant in a third vehicle reportedly escaped unharmed. The witness and his colleagues attempted to divert traffic away from the area where the shootings were taking place.

The identity of the suspect has not been released, and a motive for the shooting remains under investigation. The Houston Police Department and the Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the incident.
