The House of Representatives passed a war powers resolution on Thursday aimed at halting military conflict against Iran without congressional approval, with four Republican lawmakers joining Democrats. The vote was 214-208.
Representatives Jason Crow, D-Colo., and Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., used a privileged resolution to force the vote, which allows lawmakers to advance legislation despite opposition from House GOP leadership. The measure is largely symbolic and would not go to President Donald Trump's desk for a signature even if it were to pass the Senate.
The vote highlighted a division within the Republican party regarding the administration's actions in Iran and the visibility provided to Congress. Some Republicans have expressed concerns that the White House has not sufficiently briefed Congress on the military's operations.
Rep. Crow stated that the conflict had resulted in "18 American servicemembers killed," hundreds injured, and billions of taxpayer dollars spent, calling it an "unmitigated disaster." He criticized the President for "choosing to double down on his failures."
The Republicans who supported the Democrat-authored resolution included Reps. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio; Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa.; Thomas Barrett, R-Mich.; and Thomas Massie, R-Ky. A similar resolution passed the House in June with the support of the same four Republicans.
The vote is one of several instances this year where House Republicans have rebuked President Trump's policies, underscoring the narrow majority Republicans hold in the House.
