The "House of the Dragon" Season 3 finale depicted the brutal Battle of Tumbleton, a pivotal and bloody event from George R.R. Martin's "Fire & Blood" that resulted in numerous deaths and left the fate of Prince Daeron Targaryen unresolved.

The battle commenced as Lord Ormund Hightower occupied Tumbleton, a town loyal to Queen Rhaenyra. Hightower utilized the town's residents as human shields to deter dragonfire. Prince Daemon Targaryen, along with forces known as the Rivermen and Winter Wolves, launched an assault on the settlement.

Despite initial successes for Rhaenyra's forces, including breaching the walls and burning the city gate, the tide turned when Ulf the White, a dragonlord, unexpectedly attacked both sides. Ulf turned on his allies, engulfing Rhaenyra's troops and Lord Ormund Hightower in flames before succumbing to his own actions. The battle concluded with both armies depleted and chaotic.

In the aftermath, several key characters were confirmed dead. Lord Ormund Hightower died from a combination of wounds and dragonfire. Lord Roderick Dustin, known as Roddy the Ruin, was fatally wounded by Hightower before being consumed by dragonfire. Kat, the wife of Hugh the Hammer, was killed when Hightower soldiers used her as a human shield. The battle also resulted in the deaths of many Tumbleton residents and unnamed soldiers.

The carnage extended beyond Tumbleton. In King's Landing, Helaena Targaryen died by suicide, leaping from her window onto spikes. The High Septon was killed by Alyn of Hull on Queen Rhaenyra's orders for refusing to legitimize her claim to the throne.

Prince Daeron Targaryen's survival remains uncertain. While Ser Gwayne Hightower searched for his nephew amidst the Tumbleton ruins, he was nowhere to be found. According to Martin's "Fire & Blood," Daeron survives the first Battle of Tumbleton but is destined to die in a subsequent battle, though the circumstances of his death are rumored and unconfirmed in the books. The series' potential adaptation of combining the two battles leaves his fate ambiguous for Season 4.

Further complicating Daeron's future is the reported casting of actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth in a new film, raising questions about his availability for future "House of the Dragon" seasons.
