Honolulu police have assigned their homicide detail to investigate the death of a Southwest Airlines flight attendant who was found at the bottom of a 24-story hotel in Honolulu last Thursday. Jenny Lupton, 50, was on a work layover at the Hilton Hawaiian Village resort when she was discovered near a dumpster.
The Homicide Detail investigates murders, suicides, and suspicious or unexplained deaths. The Honolulu Police Department stated that the squad is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Lupton's death and is cooperating with her family. The department has not yet made any conclusions regarding the manner of death, and the exact cause remains pending.
Lupton’s family members have expressed strong beliefs that she did not die by suicide and suspect foul play or a tragic accident. "We are worried that there is possible foul play involved," her niece, Hannah, told USA Today. Lupton's sister, Tresa, echoed these concerns, stating, "We strongly believe that she didn’t do this intentionally, and so that leads us to think it was either some kind of freak accident or someone harmed her."
The Oklahoma Attorney General's office has contacted their Hawaiian counterpart to ensure a thorough investigation into Lupton's death, emphasizing that her family deserves answers. The investigation is expected to take time, with detectives conducting interviews, reviewing surveillance footage from approximately 70 cameras near the scene, and examining evidence.
Lupton, a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines for 23 years, was the mother of a teenage son. She had reportedly been out with a colleague shortly before her death and had communicated with her family about a planned tattoo. Southwest Airlines has stated it is cooperating with local authorities and has offered support to Lupton's family and colleagues.
