A large-scale search is in progress for Neil Gehring, 26, a hiker who disappeared during an off-trail excursion in Olympic National Park. Gehring was reported missing after he failed to complete his planned overnight trip, according to the National Park Service.

Gehring began his hike on Monday from the Madison Falls Trailhead. His itinerary involved a cross-country trek from Boulder Lake to Appleton Pass, with a planned return to the trailhead by Tuesday. Officials stated he was reported overdue at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the day after his expected return.

The search for Gehring commenced immediately after he was reported missing. The terrain in the area where he disappeared is described as rugged, with steep slopes. Olympic National Park is located along the Pacific coastline in Washington state.

Gehring is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing approximately 130 pounds, with short black hair, a slender build, and brown eyes. The National Park Service is urging anyone who was in the area or has information pertinent to the search to contact the Investigative Services Branch Tip Line at 888-653-0009 or email [email protected].
