A hidden underground encampment along a bike path in Carpinteria, California, was discovered after a fire broke out early Thursday, August 27. Emergency responders from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District were initially called to investigate smoke in a dense vegetation area along the Carpinteria Creek Bike Path.

Upon arrival, crews observed an "orange glow and flames coming from a moderate to heavy vegetation area." They found a "fully involved hidden subterranean structure that was confirmed as a homeless encampment" and extinguished the blaze. The fire did not spread to surrounding vegetation or structures, and no injuries were reported.

Following the emergency response, the city's Public Works team, Code Compliance, and the Fire Marshal convened. The subterranean structure and its debris were subsequently removed. City officials stated that the remaining work involves backfilling the area and restoring the site, with ongoing assessment and coordination with relevant agencies for permitting and reporting requirements.
