The upcoming HBO Max adaptation of the "Harry Potter" series has added Rafe Spall to its cast as Arthur Weasley, the father of Ron Weasley. Spall will follow in the footsteps of his father, Timothy Spall, who portrayed Peter Pettigrew in the original film franchise. Filming for the show's second season is expected to commence in the coming weeks.

New actors have also been cast in the roles of Moaning Myrtle and Colin Creevey. Molly Hewitt-Richards will portray the ghost Moaning Myrtle, a character previously played by Shirley Henderson, while Jasper Ambrose will take on the role of Colin Creevey, a young photographer previously portrayed by Hugh Mitchell.

The first season of the big-budget series is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day. The adaptation aims to be a more faithful rendition of J.K. Rowling's novels compared to the original films, which concluded over a decade ago.

Despite the anticipation, the series has faced controversy since its announcement in 2023. Activists critical of author J.K. Rowling's public statements on transgender issues have called for boycotts of the show. Rowling, who is an executive producer on the project, has maintained she is a defender of women's rights but has been labeled transphobic by some campaign groups.

These controversies have impacted the production, with actor Nicholas Hoult reportedly backing out of the project. Paapa Essiedu, cast as Severus Snape, has also shared that he has received death threats and racist abuse due to his role. Accusations of bullying among cast and crew, including incidents involving child extras, have also surfaced, prompting Warner Brothers to issue warnings about on-set behavior.

Despite these challenges, HBO is reportedly hoping that the enduring popularity of the "Harry Potter" franchise will help overcome the public relations issues. The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.
