Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, has announced his candidacy for Speaker of the House, but his bid is already encountering internal party opposition. An online petition, which has garnered nearly 400,000 signatures, argues that Jeffries is "not the right choice" for Speaker and urges House Democrats to select a candidate whose priorities better align with voters.

The petition states that the Speaker should represent Democratic voters, not just the party establishment, and calls for an examination of Jeffries' public record, policy positions, donor record, and leadership. Signatories expressed a desire for progressive leadership that actively challenges Republican opposition.

Jeffries, however, has indicated no wavering in his pursuit of the Speakership. He highlighted the accomplishments of House Democrats under his leadership during the minority, citing their work on issues such as opposing the Trump administration in court, defending voting rights, and advocating for the Affordable Care Act. He also outlined a plan to focus on affordability, accountability, and restoring "classic American values."

In related developments, the midterm elections resulted in Democrats securing majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This outcome is expected to put President Trump into a "lame duck" period, limiting his ability to advance his policy agenda and increasing the likelihood of Democratic-led investigations into his administration. Congressman Robert Garcia, who is slated to chair the House oversight committee, issued a warning to Trump and his allies to "Lawyer up."
