The winner of the $847 million Powerball jackpot in New Jersey may never be publicly identified, thanks to a state law enacted in 2020. Unlike most states, New Jersey permits lottery winners to remain anonymous indefinitely.
The law was established to protect winners from potential extortion, harassment, and pressure to share their newfound wealth. The winning ticket was sold at a Wegmans in Montvale, a town with a median household income of $178,000.
As of Friday, Powerball officials had not confirmed if the winner had come forward and did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The record-breaking jackpot is one of the largest in Powerball history.
