Gwyneth Paltrow has postponed a private dinner planned in honor of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at her Hamptons home, following a significant backlash online, according to a new report.

The event was reportedly scheduled for August 29. Insiders claim the dinner did not proceed as planned due to widespread criticism.

"The event was postponed for the time being because of the backlash. The party likely won't happen," a source told People.com.

Earlier in August, Puck News published details of alleged invitations for the dinner, which read, "Gwyneth Paltrow invites you to a private, off-the-record al fresco dinner at her home in honor of Sam Altman," with a Goop-affiliated RSVP email address.

The reported invitation quickly circulated on social media, drawing criticism and comparisons to dystopian fiction. The pushback has been attributed to growing public skepticism surrounding tech giants and artificial intelligence companies like OpenAI.

Social media commentary included observations about Paltrow's perceived "elitist" stance and Altman's role in AI development. Some users questioned the rationale behind honoring Altman, while others speculated about Paltrow's awareness of public perception.

In response to the controversy, Paltrow shared a series of satirical party invitations via Instagram. These featured AI-generated formatting and humorously replaced the guest of honor with fictional characters such as Shrek, Samantha Jones from "Sex and the City," the AI doll M3GAN, Jessica Rabbit, and comedian Courtney O'Donnell's alter ego Chanty Beluga. Paltrow captioned the post, "We're serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request."

While some found Paltrow's response amusing, others expressed continued disapproval, urging her to reconsider her support for AI initiatives. Some comments suggested a disconnect between her wellness-focused brand and the broader implications of AI technology.

Paltrow herself has publicly embraced AI. Her company, Goop, announced an AI partnership with the performance marketing platform Adora earlier this year. Paltrow has also discussed her frequent use of AI in interviews, including on her podcast with tech journalist Kara Swisher, where she described AI as "incredibly useful."

Goop has explored AI-related topics on its podcast, such as "The Future of AI In Health" and "AI and Modern Dating." A Goop video from 2025 also featured Paltrow discussing her use of AI for generating recipes.

In 2024, Paltrow launched an AI-powered meditation app. Goop has also undergone staff reductions, with reports from May indicating a "pivot to AI" as a rationale. Puck reported that in late 2024 and early 2025, Goop laid off approximately 70 employees, with the stated reason being "profitability and AI," and that these layoffs were "justified via pivot to AI workflow."
