The Cleveland Guardians will attempt to stave off elimination on Thursday when they face the Chicago White Sox in Game 4 of their American League Division Series. Cleveland kept their postseason hopes alive with a nine-run performance in Game 3, a significant increase from their output in the first two games of the series.

The Guardians now aim to replicate that offensive success and secure a solid pitching effort to force a winner-take-all Game 5 back in Cleveland. The winner of this series will advance to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS.

For Game 4, the Guardians are scheduled to start Parker Messick, with the White Sox countering with Hagen Smith as their opener.

Offensive Trends and Pitching Matchup

The White Sox have demonstrated considerable offensive prowess throughout the playoffs, leading the postseason in runs scored and on-base percentage. While their earlier performance against the Houston Astros in the Wild Card round may have inflated some statistics, Chicago has been a strong offensive team throughout the regular season.

However, the White Sox have also struggled with plate discipline, posting the highest strikeout rate in the playoffs at 33.2 percent. This trend was also evident during the regular season, where they held the second-highest Whiff Percentage at 27.5 percent.

Messick has a history of success against the White Sox lineup. In Game 1 of this series, he recorded six strikeouts in just 4 ⅓ innings. During the regular season, Messick logged eight and 10 strikeouts in two of his three starts against Chicago.

The White Sox's propensity to swing aggressively could provide Cleveland's pitchers with opportunities to accumulate strikeouts. If Messick can maintain his effectiveness and pitch deep into the game, he is expected to reach or exceed his strikeout total.

Chicago White Sox first baseman Munetaka Murakami strikes out during the third inning against the Cleveland Guardians in game three of the ALDS for the 2026 MLB Playoffs at Rate Field in Chicago, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026.
