Polling stations are open throughout Greater Manchester for voters to select a new mayor, a position that became vacant when Andy Burnham stepped down after being elected to Parliament. The results of the election are anticipated on Friday.
Seven candidates are vying for the role of mayor and leader of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Voters have the option to rank their choices using the supplementary vote system. If no candidate secures over 50% of the initial vote, the field narrows to the top two contenders, and second-choice votes are reallocated to determine the final winner.
The candidates, listed alphabetically by surname, are Sian Astley of Reform UK, Geraldine Coggins of the Green Party, Bev Craig of the Labour Party, Phil Eckersley of the Conservative Party, independent candidate Marcus Farmer, Richard Kilpatrick of the Liberal Democrats, and Marlon West representing Restore Britain.
Polling stations opened at 7:00 AM BST and will close at 10:00 PM BST. Information regarding the nearest polling station can be found on individual polling cards or by checking local council websites.
