A subadult great white shark named Percy has been tracked approximately 14 miles off the coast of Long Island, New York. This sighting marks a significant movement for the shark, which traveled from the coast of Sea Isle City, New Jersey, to its current location in less than a day.

Percy, weighing 432 pounds and measuring 9 feet, 9 inches when tagged, was fitted with a tracking device on July 28, 2025, off the coast of Nova Scotia by OCEARCH. The shark has since traveled an estimated 4,660 miles on a journey that has taken it from Canada down into the Gulf and back up the East Coast.

This latest ping near Long Island occurred exactly one year after Percy was initially tagged. His movements are being monitored by OCEARCH, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to researching and protecting marine life. The data gathered from tracking sharks like Percy helps scientists understand the seasonal migration patterns and behaviors of young great white sharks. Researchers utilize the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker app to follow the real-time movements of over 400 ocean animals.
