The Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), a key Republican campaign group aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, announced it and affiliated organizations have raised over $500 million for the 2026 U.S. Senate elections. This record-setting fundraising aims to defend the Republican majority in the upcoming midterm contests.
Despite the historical trend that often disadvantages the president's party in midterm elections, Republicans have amassed substantial financial resources. "Thanks to Leader John Thune and our generous investors, Senate Leadership Fund and its affiliated groups have raised more resources than any other Senate effort in history," said SLF Executive Director Alex Latcham.
The SLF plans to highlight what it characterizes as "Radical Democrats" and their support for policies on issues such as immigration, crime, and inflation. The group's strategy involves using advertising campaigns to focus on Democratic candidates' past support for progressive policies and their opposition to elements of the former Trump administration's legislative agenda.
Campaign materials from the SLF point to specific issues, such as crime, to target Democratic candidates. One advertisement featured an interviewee discussing the death of his daughter, attributing it to policies that he described as "soft-on-crime." Another ad focused on Josh Turek, a Senate hopeful in Iowa and a Paralympic gold medalist, who the ad stated missed a significant portion of his legislative votes while campaigning.
"We expect our lawmakers to show up, yet liberal politician Josh Turek missed 58% of his votes in the Iowa legislature — votes to help veterans and fund schools, yet still collected his full taxpayer-funded paycheck," the ad stated.
Latcham expressed confidence in the Republican strategy, stating, "With incredible candidates, a winning message and record funding, we are confident that Senate Republicans will maintain their majority this November and continue to deliver for the American people."
