Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., has stated that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth should be replaced, citing concerns over his leadership and "moral compass." Bacon, a 30-year Air Force veteran, told Fox News Digital that Hegseth was not a suitable choice for the position and that he would not have voted to confirm him.

Bacon suggested that Hegseth's personal conduct might have led to disciplinary action for other military members. He referenced controversies surrounding the administration's use of the Signal messaging app for discussing sensitive military operations, noting that Hegseth did not take responsibility for the incident. "Things like that bother folks who've served a lifetime in the military, have a moral compass and take responsibility," Bacon said.

The Nebraska Republican also indicated that Hegseth lacks significant support among lawmakers in Washington, D.C. He commented on the possibility of impeachment proceedings against Hegseth in a Democratic-controlled House following the midterm elections. "I do think we could have more qualified leaders," Bacon added, suggesting Trump consider replacing Hegseth.

In response to Bacon's remarks, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated that Hegseth "will not back down" and will not be deterred by politicians seeking to make partisan points or launch investigations without merit. Parnell affirmed Hegseth's commitment to supporting President Donald Trump and leading the Department of War until the end of Trump's term.

Earlier in the 119th Congress, a group of Democrats introduced legislation seeking Hegseth's impeachment. President Trump, however, indicated his intention to keep Hegseth in his Cabinet despite speculation about his future.

Bacon also discussed the future of the Republican Party, suggesting it needs to distance itself from Trump to regain electoral success. He advocated for a return to principles espoused by former President Ronald Reagan, including economic freedom, free markets, and a strong national defense. Bacon criticized the Trump administration's foreign policy decisions and its strained relationships with traditional allies.
