Republican state Sen. Brent Taylor, a leading congressional candidate in Tennessee, has described recent reports of him sending unsolicited nude photos as "youthful indiscretions" for which he has already received forgiveness from his wife and God.
Taylor, 58, who is running for the state’s 9th Congressional District, told The Nashville Scene that the "expiration date has come and gone" on such actions. "Whatever story you think you’ve got, my wife is well aware of and we’ve worked through it a long time ago," he stated, adding, "and I would consider everyone else doing the same."
The reports, first published by The Nashville Scene, allege that multiple individuals received or saw nude photos from Taylor. Taylor, who publicly identifies as a conservative Christian, was first elected to his Memphis district in 2022.
His opponent in the race for the 9th Congressional District, state Rep. Justin Pearson, called Taylor's actions "very disturbing" and "antithetical to his proclaimed Christian values." Pearson, a Democrat, stated that Taylor's characterization of sending unwanted nude photos as "youthful indiscretion" is a "ridiculous and dangerous mischaracterization of the type of predatory behavior that needs to be rooted out of our society and politics."
"Career politicians like him have been abusing their power and getting away with it for far too long," Pearson said in a statement to Memphis station WREG. "Tennessee deserves leaders who respect women — not those who sexually harass, expose their genitalia or take advantage of them. This disgusting behavior is unbecoming of any elected official."
Taylor, a former funeral home business owner, has a significant lead over Pearson in polls for the upcoming election. The 9th District was redrawn earlier this year by Republicans, altering its demographics to be predominantly white, whereas it was previously the state's only majority-Black district.
