Steve Hilton, the Republican candidate for California governor, conceded his race to Democrat Xavier Becerra on Tuesday night, but not without a parting message to the state's incoming Democratic leadership.

"In 2030, we elect a Republican governor in California," Hilton told supporters in Garden Grove. "But here’s my message to Xavier Becerra: enjoy it while it lasts."

Becerra secured victory with 64% of the vote compared to Hilton's 36%, with 59% of precincts reporting. The Associated Press called the race early Tuesday night. This outcome follows a broader trend of Democratic success in California, with the party winning statewide offices and several key House seats. Nationwide, Democrats achieved significant gains, capturing control of both the House and the Senate.

Becerra, a former Biden administration official, had maintained a substantial lead over Hilton throughout much of the campaign. The Republican Party has not won the California governor's race since 2006.

Despite his concession, Hilton expressed well wishes for Becerra's tenure. "We have a new governor in California," Hilton stated. "I know it’s not the one you wished for, but I do wish Xavier Becerra well. We want our state to be governed properly."

Becerra, who will be the first Latino governor in California in approximately 150 years, celebrated his victory, acknowledging the challenges the state has faced. "What a great night to be a Californian. What a great night to be an American," Becerra said in his victory speech. "To be the son of immigrants from a union household to be standing in victory with all of you. Now, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. These past two years have been tough: higher prices, more wars, corruption and lawlessness. But we hung in there; fought back. It felt like Mission: Impossible. We knew it was mission necessary."

Becerra is set to succeed current Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who is reportedly considering a presidential run and will step down in January.
