The participation of quarterback Geno Smith in the New York Jets' second preseason game against the Steelers on Friday night is uncertain, according to coach Robert Saleh.
Smith missed the team's preseason opener against the Buccaneers due to ankle soreness. He has, however, returned to practice this week and has participated in all three sessions. Saleh stated his desire for all starters to gain game repetitions but also acknowledged the need to manage Smith's physical condition.
"It is, but I think the thing that we do quite a bit is make sure we have game intensity in practice, and I think our guys do a really good job of that," Saleh said. "It’s not just with Geno, it’s any player: Breece [Hall], Garrett [Wilson], Double-D [Demario Davis], any of those guys. As we get to the end of it, we want to make sure we make the right decision on playing the guys or not."
Saleh indicated he has not observed any physical limitations from Smith during practices this week. If Smith is unable to play, it would provide another opportunity for backup quarterback Cade Klubnik to solidify his position.
"I just think there’s soreness," Saleh said of Smith's ankle. "I think any player at this point knows that something is going to hurt at some point. He’s a competitor and he wants to make sure he gets those reps in. The thing is that we want to be smart too about how we go about doing things when it comes to him and any of our players."
In other team news, cornerback Qwan’Tez Stiggers returned to practice Wednesday after collapsing during a joint practice with the Buccaneers on August 11. Stiggers remains in the concussion protocol and was observed in a red noncontact jersey.
The Jets held a lighter practice on Wednesday following a more intense session Tuesday. Defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat, edge rusher Joseph Ossai, and linebacker Kiko Mauigoa were held out to manage their workloads. Wide receiver Tim Patrick and defensive tackle David Onyemata were given veteran rest days.
The team also signed wide receiver Junior Bergen and waived wide receiver DT Sheffield with an injury designation.
