Florida police have closed their investigation into an alleged assault involving New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith, releasing photographs depicting injuries sustained by Smith and a woman who accused him of assault. The woman, who claimed to be an ex-girlfriend, contacted officers on June 21, reporting that Smith had assaulted her at his Davie, Florida residence. She also posted a video on Instagram accusing Smith of attacking her.
Police arrived at the scene to interview both individuals, but no arrests were made. Smith denied being in a relationship with the woman, stating they had a casual sexual relationship and that she was a caretaker for his children. He alleged that the woman entered his home without permission and attempted to steal approximately $20 million worth of designer watches and jewelry before trying to leave.
Smith also claimed the woman attempted to re-enter his home, leading him to grab and push her away. He stated she then tried to punch him and scratch his face. Officers reported observing two scratches on Smith's face and a knot on the back of his head.
The woman, in turn, claimed to police that she only entered Smith's home without authorization because he threatened to report her for kidnapping. She stated that after placing Smith's son in his room, she took a gift she had bought for the child and left. According to her account, Smith followed her to her car, took her laptop and $800 from her vehicle, and shoved her to the ground. She then alleged that she took watches from Smith's office in an attempt to retrieve her belongings.
Officers noted a cut between the woman's thumb and index finger and a bruise on her left arm, but found no marks to indicate she had been choked, as she had claimed. Both parties reportedly declined to provide sworn statements to authorities.
A supplemental case report indicated that "No further investigative steps can be reasonably taken with the information presently available" and that any future action would depend on additional information or evidence.
The investigation's closure comes after a series of offseason traffic infractions for Smith. On July 6, he was cited for allegedly driving 70 mph in a 45 mph zone. Previously, he was cited for attaching an unassigned tag to his vehicle and for driving without his license in his possession. The New York Jets reacquired Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and he has played for multiple teams, including the New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, and Las Vegas Raiders. He was traded back to the Jets in March after playing for the Raiders, having won the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award in 2022.
